Crystal collimators
Description
Crystal collimation of ion beam cleaning at the LHC has been part of the R&D program of the HL-LHC-WP5, following the encouraging results of the UA9 collaboration at the SPS. Following the HL-LHC Cost & Schedule review 2019, crystal collimation was integrated in the HL-LHC upgrade baseline as a mitigation measure for schedule risks associated with the 11T dipole program.Following the decision at HL-TCC in Nov. 2020 not to install the 11T dipoles during LS2, crystal collimation is not the baseline solution to improve ion collimation cleaning during Run 3.
It is planned to upgrade the crystal collimation test stand in IR7 in two phases:
- The vertical TCPCs are being built at CERN and they are planned to be replaced at the end of 2021.
- The horizontal TCPCs will be replaced at the following YETS 2022-23.
